Groce: “What kind of question is that? Goodness gracious”

WCIA — Illinois head coach John Groce was less than pleased when I asked him about his message to fans following a 25-point loss at Maryland in the Big Ten opener earlier this week.

“What kind of question is that, Bret?  Goodness gracious,” Groce said.

After hearing from dozens of frustrated Illinois fans since the blowout loss on Tuesday, I wanted to present Groce the opportunity to talk directly to Illini Nation.

“Obviously we want to play better than we did the other day,” said Groce.  “I want those guys to do it for each other, certainly they talk a lot about doing it for Illinois and certainly we want to play better basketball.  We want to control what we control and we’d been doing that very, very well.  The other day we took a step backwards, we’ve got to improve a great deal.”

Illinois returns to the court Sunday evening hosting Ohio State at 6 p.m.  The Illini are 10-4 this season and 0-1 in the Big Ten.  Groce has a 29-44 league record in his fifth season in Champaign.  The former Buckeyes assistant has just one win against OSU in seven games.
