Danville line leading the way

DANVILLE — The Danville Vikings are 1-0 to start the season for the first time since 2011.  That’s also the last year the program posted a winning record at the end of the season,  going 10-2 with a trip to the quarterfinals.

This year’s team has high hopes of reaching the playoffs and they’ll lean on their offensive line to get them there.  The average weight of each lineman is a little less than 300 pounds.  Aside from the shear size of the line, the group has familiarity.  Most of them have started together since their sophomore seasons.

“Our friendship, I think, is really special,” Danville senior guard Byron Grant said.  “We’re all friends.  We can all joke around with each other and critique each other’s blocks and help each other get better.  I think that’s really important with us.”
The line has already shared their critiques in preparation for this week’s game against Central, in what will be their toughest opponent yet.
“It’s kind of neat because you get to see them, they like each other,” Danville head coach B.J. Luke said.  “They’re a good group.  They like to hang out together away from the football field, and an offensive line, that’s really what you want is a bunch of guys who are going to hang together and get the job done.”

The Vikings will lean on their line against the Maroons, a team that beat them 27-20 last season.  Central relies heavily on its running game, something Danville is certainly aware of.

“Central’s got this weird idea to think that they’re the best running team in the conference and I don’t know where they got that from,” Danville senior tackle Josiah Heidle said.
“We have a really strong run game, but say we run power, power, power, power, and then all the sudden we do a little slip and boom, that’s a touchdown,” Danville’s Colton Castongue said.
The O-line admits they’ll have to play better than last week against Kankakee, when they scored on just one of four possessions in the first half.
