THOMASBORO, Ill. (WCIA) — The village is now accepting applications for a full-time police chief. Right now they have a part-time chief, but he’s retiring.

Mayor Tyler Evans says he’s hoping hiring a full-time chief will be good for the community. He thinks it will cut down on calls and allow the chief to be more involved with the school and other organizations.

Evans says he’s had six people interested so far. The board will be accepting applications until the end of the month. After that, they’ll pick the top candidates and talk about them at next month’s board meeting.

People who live in Thomasboro say they know what they want those candidates to look like.

“We have small stuff that goes on here that just needs a friendly face to say everything’s okay, but then we need a cop that’s going to make sure everybody obey the laws, too.”

The mayor says he welcomes input from the community. The board is just trying to figure out how to get that feedback.

Originally, village leaders were thinking about contracting with the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, but they decided against that earlier this month.
