UPDATE at 2:40 p.m. on 10/20/2022

The Edge-Scott Fire Protection District confirmed new information regarding a house fire on Wednesday.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a house fire at 11:16 p.m. at the 2700 block of California Avenue in Urbana.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found fire extending through the roof.  A neighboring house received minor damage due to radiant heat from the fire.

Firefighters had the fire under control in approximately 45 minutes and remained on the scene until approximately 3:00 a.m., putting out hot spots.

Over 30 firefighters responded to the scene. Edge-Scott firefighters were assisted by Urbana, Savoy, St. Joseph, and Eastern Prairie firefighters.

Arrow ambulance also responded.

The house’s occupants, a family of 2 adults and 6 children, were displaced and are staying with relatives temporarily.

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal continues work to determine the cause of the fire.

There were no injuries reported.

No other information is being released at this time.


URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) – Crews responded to a house fire in Urbana late Wednesday night just after 11 p.m.

The fire occurred on East California Avenue by Pfeffer Road. Our crews reported extensive damage to the home, and that the roof above the garage was destroyed.

Neighbors told our crew there were flames coming from the roof, and that the house is home to a family with six children. It is currently unknown what caused the fire and if anyone is hurt.
