SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (NEXSTAR) — A Springfield police officer is being accused of posting various kinds of hate speech on social media sites.

Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette released the following statement on Friday:

Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder issued the following statement:

The social media posts that were made by a Springfield officer were alarming, and the City of Springfield has zero tolerance for this type of behavior. As public servants, we have an even greater responsibility to speak out against discrimination, xenophobia, and hatred, and I stand behind the actions of Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette and his Command staff in placing the officer on unpaid administrative leave, pending an investigation. Springfield is a city of inclusion, tolerance, and respect for all. What was expressed by this officer is not a reflection of the Springfield Police Department nor the service the men and women of the force provide our residents each and every day.
