DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Police are investigating a shooting that hurt one woman.
It happened at the corner of E. Garfield and Railroad Avenues Saturday night underneath the Garfield overpass.
When police got to the scene around 9:30, they found the 22-year-old woman unresponsive. She was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital.
One woman says she saw what lead up to the shooting.
“I looked out the door. There was about 10 to 12 cars. There was like 30-40 people,” says Keylee Zerfowski. “Then, all of a sudden there was just gunshots going off. Then, everybody started screaming around, leaving, and running.”
Another man says he lives next to that underpass and he believes his friend was in danger.
“I heard that people came to attack my best friend who stays here at my house with me,” says Kenny Wells. “They were defending themself as they were trying to get everybody off the property, and some shots were fired. We don’t know who shot those shots. I don’t condone any gun violence. [My friend] doesn’t condone any [gun violence].”
At last check, Decatur police say the victim was still alive. They are not releasing any other information at this time.
