CHAMPAIGN — Central Illinois came through once again. This time, it was to help animals in need.

WCIA-3 just wrapped up our first Pounds for Pets event in our back parking lot. People donated $11,760.50 and 13,098.425 pounds worth of pet supplies, which will be divided among 10 different organizations.

Volunteers say they were amazed by the generosity of the community.

“The food donations, cat litter, monetary donations and just people coming out with their dogs just to say ‘Thank you,’ to the volunteers and shelter staff,” said Dawn Nasser, a volunteer with the Vermilion County Animal Shelter.

“We have a dog and a cat and we love them very much and we always try to give to things like this,” said Donna Reed, of Champaign. “It’s wonderful.”

“Animals can’t speak for themselves and there’s so many unwanted pets in the shelter that it’s heartbreaking,” said Theresa Kamerer, of Philo. “Just wanted to do our part!”

Plenty of people stopped by with their furry friends. If you missed it, you can still donate online.
