Police say roads were safer this holiday weekend

ILLINOIS — Roads were busy this holiday weekend, but state police say they didn’t deal with as many crashes. More people traveled, possibly because of lower gas prices.

State police had details stationed all over the district. They say, overall, there were 15 crashes throughout the weekend and 135 violations handed out. They predict those numbers are down from last year.

Champaign wasn’t the only county dealing with fatalities. A man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Farmer City while another was killed in an accident on I-55 and three people were killed in a crash in Cumberland County.

State police will put together statistics in the coming weeks from all local departments.

The details set up around the district were looking for the fatal four: speeding, distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence.
