SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A child is recovering in the hospital after what police believe to be an accidental shooting.
It happened earlier Tuesday afternoon in the 3200 block of Sequoia Drive. Police said the victim was a three year old. The child’s injuries were described as non-life threatening.
Officers said the child was home with a relative, who is not his legal guardian, at the time of the shooting. They stated the gun belonged to the child’s parent/legal guardian who has a valid FOID card. The gun was loaded and not secured in a case at the time of the incident.
Police said the gun was found and placed in Springfield Police evidence.
“DCFS has been advised of the incident. Upon completion of the investigation, all reports will be forwarded to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney for potential charges,” said officers.
