CHAMPAIGN — Police arrested two local teens for recent robberies.

18-year old Jaime Varelas and a 17-year old male juvenile were taken into custody about 2 am, Wednesday, at Meijer Supermarket, on North Prospect.

The first robbery happened just before 11 pm, Tuesday, at Fifth and Stoughton, when a woman was shoved to the ground, physically assaulted and robbed of her wallet and cellphone. About an hour later, police learned the victim’s credit card was used at Meijer by the suspects.

About 2 am, a man walking in the area of Third and Springfield, reported being hit from behind, forced to the ground, physically assaulted and robbed of items including his wallet, cellphone, computer and backpack.

The victim was treated for minor injuries. Authorities say the suspects returned to Meijer in an attempt to use the second victim’s credit card.

Both are charged with robbery.
