CHAMPAIGN — Central High School’s jazz band is heading to the Big Apple, but could use some help from the community.
The jazz ensemble is attending a jazz festival and competition there this summer. Only 15 bands around the country get to go.
Central’s band has about 20 members. The group could use some help with travel expenses. The director says the kids are getting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The ensemble just returned from Savanna, Georgia, where it went after Chicago.
The cost for the New York trip is $1,100 per student. They plan to do a fundraising effort on their own. Donations are being collected.
