Millions in economic impact from wrestling tourney

CHAMPAIGN — If you got stuck in traffic near the State Farm Center, you shouldn’t be surprised. The IHSA State Wrestling Tournament is in town. It’s been held here nearly 50 years.

40,000 people are expected to see the best on the mat this weekend. It’s one of the highest-attended events put on by the Illinois High School Association. More than 670 wrestlers compete.

They started Thursday with champions being crowned Saturday night. Visit Champaign County estimates a $5.5 million economic impact to the area for hosting it.
