Mentors, students reconnect over breakfast

URBANA — A mentor can make a great impact on the life of a child. In Urbana, students and their mentors reconnected Wednesday morning after a summer apart.

Students at the high-school started their day with a “reconnection breakfast.” Many of them were joined by mentors they’ve had since elementary school.

The program’s coordinator says this is a great opportunity for people to make a big difference, without a big effort.

“It’s really about presence and it’s really about care and if someone comes into the mentoring relationship with those two things, presence and care, it’s going to be a successful experience,” said Tom Howley.

It’s not too late to sign up; The next mentor training dates for CU’s One-to-One Mentor Program are:

  • Wednesday September 14, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Urbana Free Library
  • Tuesday October 4, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Mellon Administration Building, Champaign
