DELAND — Four years ago, State Police Trooper James Sauter was killed after a semitrailer hit him. Now, state police are enforcing a road safety memorial operation dedicated to him.
It’s a 24-hour special enforcement focused on commercial truck drivers. They’re checking to make sure the drivers are complying with federal safety regulations.
Trooper Sauter was parked on the side of I-294 when a semitrailer hit and killed him. State police want to make sure commercial truck drivers are following the law.
ISP Safety Education Officer Tracy Lillard says, “We do see a lot of commercial motor vehicle drivers that have expired licenses or they don’t have the right classification to drive those large trucks. Those are 80,000 pound vehicles and we want to make sure they’re safe out there when you’re traveling next to them.”
Within the last four years, two ISP troopers were hit and killed by commercial vehicles and another was seriously hurt.
