UPDATE: Wednesday 1/4/16, 2:00pm

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – The coroner is releasing information, on a man found dead in an Urbana field.  Preliminary autopsy results show, Deonta Rozier died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.  Rozier’s death remains under investigation as a homicide.

UPDATE: Tuesday, 1/3/17, 7:53 PM

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — The coroner has identified the man who was found dead in a harvested corn field on Tuesday. Authorities say 21-year-old Deonta Andre Rozier was the man found in the 5600 block of North Lincoln Avenue in Somer Township. He is from Champaign. Investigators say he was pronounced dead at 12:30 pm at the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies are calling it a murder investigation, but we still don’t know how he died. The autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning. An inquest may be held later. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the area around 10:45 am Tuesday. The person who owned the property called them after he found someone on his land and wasn’t sure if the man was sleeping or dead. When they realized he was dead, the investigation took a turn. Authorities say the land owner told them he didn’t know who it was. Detectives, crime scene investigators, and others were working in less than ideal conditions through the day.

“It’s a challenge for them when the rain was as hard as it was and dirt now turns to mud and anything that may have been around is going to be diluted, so they had some challenges to go through, but I’m pretty confident they did the best they could in the circumstances,” said Champaign County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Allen Jones.

Authorities say drivers may have been able to see the body from the road, depending on where they were. So they’re asking anyone who may have information about this to call the sheriff’s office or Champaign County Crime Stoppers.

Deputies say they’re not sure about the time frame or how long that man has been dead, so they hope the autopsy tomorrow helps them move forward with this case. The sheriff’s office is working with the coroner and state’s attorney on the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 217.384.1213 or Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217.373.8477.
