MACON COUNTY — One man faces charges for illegal dumping and authorities are searching for a second suspect.
Tuesday, December 13, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of illegally dumped garbage on West Grand Road, between Wyckles and Glasgow. Officials say nearly 20 large bags of trash were dumped under the I-72 overpass.
An investigation determined a Decatur resident paid a 46-year old Maroa man to clean out his garage. The 46-year old hired a 20-year old to help him. The resident told police he assumed the man he hired would properly dispose of the waste.
Sunday, 20-year old Dustin Hassler was arrested for illegal dumping, Authorities are still searching for the 46-year old and have not released any other information about him at this time.
Hassler was issued a notice to appear and is due in court January 17.
Officials say the area has become notorious for illegal dumping. Those caught doing so face fines up to $1,500 per violation or more depending on the items dumped. Those people will also be held accountable for the costs of the county to clean up the debris and properly dispose of it.
