CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Another week of rain is causing problems for farmers. That’s because they can’t plant while the ground is this wet.
It usually takes five or six dry days for the ground to fully dry out. This is a good time of year to start planting, but this week is putting those plans on hold. Farmers said they aren’t getting too concerned, yet.
“A lot of people are really concerned, and I don’t blame them,” said Paul Berbaum. “I mean, it is a little bit concerning. I mean, it’s disappointing when you start out bad. It’s disappointing when you start out with a good crop and something happens during the season. But when you start out bad, it kind of disapointing, but I mean, the opportunity’s still there.”
Once farmers do start planting, drivers need to be careful. Farmers could be working late into the night, and drivers will need to be ready to slow down.
New technology on tractors lets them work when it’s dark outside. They will probably work long hours to help them finish as soon as possible because of how late in the season it’s getting.
