Walk down memory lane: historical connection to Decorated Days

Local News

BEMENT, Ill. (WCIA) — The town took a trip down memory lane this holiday. Bryant Cottage State Historic Site has a few displays of Memorial Day.

They reflect on the holiday when it was called the “Decorated Days” during the Civil War. During those times, communities took flowers to graves and decorated them.

Piatt County families who served in the war can find how they’re connected to that history.

“These are their relatives, these are the people they have their name to, so being able to connect back to this greater section of history is pretty incredible. For a small town like Bement, having something like the Bryant Cottage is also really a way to tie into that greater American story,” says site manager Ben Pollard.

The displays will be at Bryant Cottage for the next week. Rosters will be available for anyone to see.

Anyone can stop by Thursday – Saturday, 9 am – 5 pm.
