Village says hands are tied in air base flooding

Local News

RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Rain has left part of Chanute Air Force Base flooded, but village leaders said they can’t do much about it.

The base’s hospital is underwater. Its ownership has changed hands several times, but it’s currently owned by the Champaign County Trustee.

Rantoul has used pumps and spent more than $40,000 to try and remove the water in the past, but it hasn’t worked. So they put in a fence to keep people out of the area. They said they’ve done what they could to fix the problem.

The base closed in 1993.
