Vice mayor breaks barriers

Local News

DANVILLE — If you ever visit the city, you can see a water tower saying they’re “at the corner of progress and history.” Now they’re doing just that.

Brenda Brown was sworn in as the first female vice- mayor.

She was elected to be alderwoman of Ward 1 in 2015.

When she earned that title, she became the first African-American alderwoman.

She encourages women and young African-Americans to serve.

“You have a lot to offer. Sometimes we feel that maybe we don’t have a degree or maybe I don’t come from the right family or neighborhood and that is simply not the issue,” says Brenda Brown.

Brown is looking forward to working with the mayor.

Her husband, the late Lester Brown was one of the first black aldermen to serve on the Danville council.
