UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The UI Police Department is rolling out 65 new body cameras for each member of the department.
The department gave a presentation of what the cameras will capture.
The view is supposed to match what the human eye can see, so when it comes up as evidence, courts can have the officer’s perspective of how things happened, allowing them to justify their response.
One helpful use of the camera is demonstrating use of force. UIPD shows why it can often take more than one officer to make an arrest calling for use of force.
Champaign and Rantoul police departments already use body cameras.
