CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County Clerk said the county is in desperate need of upgraded election software and equipment.
Aaron Ammons hosted a tour Tuesday of the election department for county board members. He said only about a quarter of their voter-assisted terminals work, they don’t have enough vote tabulators and they’re out of date. Plus, their ballot creation software is more than a decade old. He said overall, they need major updates.
“Three of the four essential components we need to run an election aren’t even manufactured anymore,” said Ammons. “They’re that outdated. We’ve got a program that runs on Windows XP. If it wasn’t so serious, it would be funny.”
He said right now, it’s a security issue. The next election is March 17, 2020.
