UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The UI’s academic senate voted to support a statement against the portrayal of Chief Illiniwek.

In May, the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma called the chief “a degrading racial stereotype that reflects negatively on all American Indian people.”

Monday, the senate passed a resolution supporting that view as well as efforts to stop public portrayals and the use of the chief’s image.

The resolution vote was nearly unanimous.
