UI forms sexual assault prevention department

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — There’s a new department to prevent sexual assault at the UI. Student leaders say they saw some holes in how the crime was being addressed, so they created a group to focus specifically on prevention.

Members are going to be taking a look at other universities. They want to know what others schools do well when it comes to preventing sexual assault and see if they can bring any of those initiatives to UI.

They’re looking at campus programs, too. Student leaders say they think assault training on campus could be improved, and the department will look into how to do that.

The student body president says she hopes the department will teach people on campus about their resources. All in all, she says it will improve them.

“I wanted it to cover the reaction aspect as well. It was just not enough for our campus, where there’s 47,000 students and one in five students are assaulted. We definitely need a preventative aspect as well.”

The new department will also offer support to survivors and look at how other sexual assault organizations at UI can be improved.
