Two pets killed in basement fire

Local News

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Two animals were killed in a basement fire Tuesday night.

It happened in the 2300 block of Hawthorne Drive in Decatur. Fire officials say the fire started in the basement. While crews were able to put out the flames quickly and stop it from spreading, a dog and cat were killed.

Responders tried to revive the animals, but were unsuccessful. Another dog was in the house, but officials could not find it and thought maybe it ran away.

A woman and two boys lived in the house, but were not home at the time. They are now staying with nearby family. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
