CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Two churches joined forces today to honor one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s goals; more diversity in churches.

In 1960, King said the most segregated hour in America is eleven o’clock on Sunday morning.

This is a partnership between the two churches, and it’s not the first time Restoration Church and new Covenant Fellowship have paired up. Last year on Good Friday they came together for a Streetfest Against Violence.

People say the best part was people of all backgrounds worshipping together.

“Just watching them come through the door, I knew it was going to be good.”

Ervin Williams is the pastor for Restoration Urban Ministries, and Renee Antrosio is the pastor for New Covenant Fellowship.

“It was beautiful, it was beautiful to just see everyone sitting together and talking together and worshipping together.”

It’s a moment they both say helps to bridge the divide, and reinforce one simple message.

“Even though we worship in different places, we’re still one.”

Williams says it’s an especially important point to make recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“This was just powerful. We’ve heard the message that we sometimes see the social activists, but we don’t see the reverend part of it, the man of god who was being led and moved which makes it even bigger than what we see.”

Even though the steps seem small, and the congregations normally meet in different churches, this is a testament to King’s vision.

“Even though both of our churches have white people, Restoration tends to have more black and Covenant right now is primarily white, we really felt that we should come to them. We love each other and we need each other, we’re all in this together and that’s what’s important.”

It’s a bond which both Antrosio and Williams say is becoming stronger.  

“We came away knowing each other better, we all worship the same god, and we need each other, none of us can live without the other, if they’re not doing well, we’re not doing well, our destinies are bound up in each other.”

Williams says they plan on doing this again in the future, next time it’ll be at New Covenant Fellowship.
