Transgender inmate suing for transfer

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A transgender inmate at the Danville Correctional Facility is suing to be transferred to a women’s prison.

A lawsuit was filed this week by MacArthur Justice Center and Uptown People’s Law Center on behalf of an anonymous inmate named “Tay Tay.” It states the Illinois Department of Corrections failed to keep her safe at the men’s prison. The lawsuit claims a previous report of a prison rape was disregarded and she was threatened with solitary confinement if she filed another complaint.

Tay Tay first requested transfer to a women’s prison in 2012, but instead has been moved to four different men’s facilities. Her attorneys say she wants to be transferred to the Logan Correctional Facility. IDOC says it does not comment on pending litigation.
