Tragic accident reinforces need for safety

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — After a tragic bus crash in rural Indiana killed three young siblings, Illinois bus drivers are reflecting on safety.

It seems people everywhere break the law to get around school buses. A bus driver for Prairieview-Ogden Junior High says people are always trying to beat the bus.

He’s seen several people speed up when they see the yellow lights come on, trying to beat the stop arm. Because of that, he’s developed his own safety methods.

Your license can be suspended for three months if you’re caught passing a school bus while it has kids. You’ll also get a $150 fine for a first offense.

If it happens again, you could pay $500 and lose your license for a year.
