DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Over the past several decades manufacturer after manufacturer has left blue-collar towns across the country, but Saturday one town celebrated the companies it still has.
From NASCAR tire rims to plaques for NASA to Military jet parts, they all come out of the Danville area. And Saturday, people in Vermilion County toured some of the area’s manufacturers that make them.
Most of these companies struggle to fill positions. Organizers say that’s one of the reasons vermilion advantage started the Tour of Industries four years ago. They say, locally and nationally, manufacturing jobs are the hardest to fill.
Eight companies gave people an inside look at what they do. Many of them are international companies that make products used all over the world. But several manufacturers left Danville and other cities across the country over the past few decades. Officials say that could be why they have trouble filling positions now.
Officials say many of these companies are growing, and they hire for a number of positions, from engineers to accountants to drivers. Organizers say they hope this event raises awareness and helps fill some of those positions.
