CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – When you think of superheroes, you might think of the ones featured in the classic D.C. and Marvel comics.
Saturday was about the everyday heroes…the ones you can find in your home, specifically, those with four legs.
People with this event call them “Animarvels.”
They describe them as superheroes that use their power of love and comfort to help people fight off the darkness in their lives.
The non-profit that put together the expo, Rattle the Stars, does education on suicide prevention.
Organizers say, sometimes, just like a true superhero, an Animarvel could even save a life.
“I think that it’s important to have animals and know that they can be used to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, and PTSD, and that they’re a great source of therapy for people,” said Monica Cherry.
People who have been impacted by an animal were invited to share their stories during the event.
