SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A family is looking for answers after a school prank turned deadly.
A 14-year old boy was killed after jumping from a school bus. It happened Friday, on 6th and Bergen Avenue.
Now, loved ones are saying more could have been done to stop him from doing it. The family says it began as a dare from friends while on the way home from school. Idris Alford jumped out of the bus and was killed.
Neighbors and classmates say the prank is nothing new; it’s an end-of-the-school-year ritual students have pulled off in previous years, but this time, things turned deadly.
School board leaders say they’ve never heard of the prank.
“Kind and honest and he liked to make jokes.”
Loved ones reminisce about Idris’ life, ended too soon. On the way home Friday, he took a dare which took his life. He jumped off the back of a school bus while it was moving.
“He jumped and he didn’t have any intention of hurting himself, I’m sure, but it turned into a pretty tragic accident.”
He was knocked unconscious. Those nearby rushed to the scene.
“He really wasn’t moving. He wasn’t talking. He didn’t look good.”
“I was scared and stuff. I couldn’t believe he was laying there.”
Within minutes, the teen was rushed to the hospital with severe head trauma. He was pronounced dead Monday afternoon.
“We was praying for him.”
Now, his family is demanding answers.
“If the bus driver has been where the sign post is or had been at the back of the school bus to watch the emergency exit, there’s no way my brother could have gotten there.”
They say they’re taking legal action. They feel someone was not doing their job.
“There was a driver and a monitor on this bus, so that’s just where we are right now. We’re waiting for them to investigate what happened during that ride.”
School district leaders say they’re working with the family to get to the bottom of things.
“Most important thing for District 186 is to support the family at this time, to support the loved ones.”
“Kids will be kids and it’s on the adults to make sure that they’re as safe as long as they’re in their custody.”
Grief counselors have been provided on campus the past few days. Students, teachers and family members have all taken advantage of the support.
Police are investigating the incident, but so far do not believe anything criminal occurred.
First Student Bus Company subcontracts with the school district and would not comment on the incident except to say they’re going through a very thorough investigation.
