CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Memorial Day is the “unofficial” start of summer which includes boating season for many. People are heading to Lake Vermilion or Lake Decatur in droves, so officials are issuing warnings.
Check equipment before hitting the water. A big part is making sure gas tanks aren’t leaking because it can easily harm animals. Authorities urge you to be mindful of wildlife wherever you’re boating.
Don’t leave without life jackets. Regular boaters say, even though safety protocols can be a process, they’re well worth it.
Officials say the number of injuries and deaths due to boating fell between 2015 – 2016. Last year, Illinois Conservation Police investigated 73 accidents; 36 were injuries and 11-boating related deaths.
