CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Just because things look good on the surface doesn’t mean they are behind the scenes. It’s one of the messages in a new book by a former area businessman.
Parham Parastaran sold his multi-million dollar car and tire business, Car-X, last year. Friday, he released a memoir called Perfect Pain about how he tackled years of trauma and substance abuse to find himself.
Fourteen years ago, most people would have looked at Parastaran and think he was living the American dream.
His family came to the U.S. during the Iranian revolution and he went on to have a successful business, loving wife and beautiful family.
But, behind the scenes, he was addicted to drugs and alcohol and still dealing with childhood trauma. So, he started psychoanalysis therapy to get to the root fo his problems.
Parastaran says he hopes the book inspires others to be honest with themselves. He says knowing and loving yourself is the first step to loving others.
Parastaran sold his 16 Car-X stores in 2017. The company which bought them estimated they would add $15 million in annual sales.
