CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Students and staff at Jefferson Middle School are grieving over a student’s death. Family and friends say 12-year old DeShaun Quinn died from an unexpected medical emergency.
Staff who knew him best told stories of how he loved peanut butter or how he loved to mess with a math teacher in the hallways.
One common them was how loved DeShaun was. One of his closest relationships was with School Resource Officer Shelly Dominguez. She said she sat with him every Thursday to eat lunch.
During that time, they’d play Uno; something everyone said DeShaun loved to do. Officer Dominguez still has pictures he drew hanging in her office.
The school social worker says a handful of students reached out for support. They’ve been working with students through the process.
DeShaun died August 10 and his funeral was Monday. DeShaun’s family is selling bracelets in his honor to raise money for his headstone.
