Students linked to accusations against professor

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — 2 UI students were arrested for threatening someone at knifepoint. It all connects back to an accusation of sexual harassment against a professor.

23-year old William Farrell and 21-year old Summer Naqvi are charged with intimidation and aggravated unlawful restraint.

Police say the pair threatened and intimidated Naqvi’s ex-boyfriend with a knife at his apartment near East White and 3rd Street last week.

The victim told police Farrell and Naqvi did it so she could delete information from his computer. The victim believes it was connected to Naqvi’s accusations of sexual harassment against UI economics professor Joe Petry.

Sunday, she posted on Facebook, revealing herself as the student who wrote on Reddit in April about the misconduct accusations. Petry was put on administrative leave in February and later resigned.

When that happened, his lawyer released this statement: “Petry’s strong conviction of his innocence, the stress put on his family from the investigation was the main factor in his resignation.”

His lawyer also said Petry’s resignation was part of a binding agreement with the university in exchange for the investigation formally ending.
