DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Students at South View Upper Elementary School spent the afternoon learning that what happens online doesn’t always stay there.

The Danville Public School Foundation sponsored an assembly about social media, which was put on as part of the My Life Online program. The goal is to teach students how to be safe, smart and kind online.

The speaker explained you can lose jobs or scholarships if you post something inappropriate. He told kids to treat social media as an extension of their resume and never post something you wouldn’t want your grandma to see.

Another mission of the program is to prevent cyber bullying. Studies show 20 percent of kids bullied online have thought about suicide, and one in 10 have attempted it.
