SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Kids in Illinois could be required to start school earlier than ever before.
State Senator Kimerley Lightford wants to lower the madatory kindergarten age from 6 to 5. Students that turn 5 after May 31 could be held back until the next year.
She believes that if the state can get kids in school earlier, they’ll be more likely to stay in school.
The bill passed the senate a couple of weeks ago. Now it is scheduled to go to a bote in the House when lawmakers return next week.
