ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The State Capitol is now an official home for Purple Heart recipients.
In honor of Purple Heart Day, the Illinois Veterans Affairs Department unveiled a new Purple Heart flag. It will be put on display in the Capitol alongside a slate of honorable flags.
The Purple Heart is awarded to combat veterans wounded in the line of duty. In Illinois alone, roughly 1,000 veterans are recipients.
Two years ago, Illinois became the fourth Purple Heart State. Since then, each year on August 7, those who served are honored.
