UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — It’s the first time in decades the UI Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be at the State Farm Center.
For 42-years, it’s been hosted around the country, but now all those teams will be playing at the UI’s big arena. Teams are coming from all around the country including Alabama, Minnesota, Texas and Missouri.
Both men’s and women’s tournaments are this week. It’s the highest level of wheelchair basketball a player can aspire to.
The women’s head coach, Stephanie Wheeler, says it means the world to host it at State Farm Center. In 2012, it was at Huff Hall, but this is the first time since 1969 they’ve had the opportunity to play at this arena.
Both men and women compete this Thursday. If they win, they’ll continue through the weekend. Games and parking are free, so fans are encouraged to come support the teams.
