Standing water still a problem in this town

Local News

RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Village officials say they still don’t have a permanent fix for the standing water at the former Chanute Air Force Base hospital.

Since April, they’ve been pumping water out of the garbage-filled pool and using insecticide to try to keep mosquitos away. The EPA has deemed the water to be nonhazardous, but residents say it’s still smelly and dangerous.

The village can only do so much to fix the problem because they don’t own the land where the water stands. A company called Unique Storage does, but they haven’t paid their taxes for years.

The county can take over the deed and sell the property, but officials say they first want to establish written deed requirements with the village. That way, the next owners will be required to care of the problem.
