Some disapprove of “diverse” event

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Days after negative feedback canceled an event, it’s getting new life in a different form.

There was supposed to be a Drag Queen Story Hour for families at the Danville Public Library Saturday. But, the library canceled it after receiving complaints. After that, they say they didn’t think anyone would come.

Now, it seems the show will go on. The drag queen who was scheduled to read to kids Saturday says she’s working on putting something together for October.

She doesn’t have a time or date set yet, but someone else who heard about what happened is also planning an event. All the details are still being worked out, but it’s going to be at her home September 23.

Many people complained about the library event. One woman was critical because the library is a public place, but says she’s happy to hear it’s being rescheduled somewhere private.

Drag Queen Story Hour was created as a way to celebrate diversity and help curb bullying of LGBTQ kids.

The Urbana Free Library hosts Drag Queen Story Hour pretty regularly with the most recent being Friday.

Organizers say it wasn’t just the negative feedback which caused the cancellation, but the day before the event, they’d only heard from one family planning to attend. So, they say it didn’t make sense to move forward with it.
