DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A woman was scammed out of $1,500 over the phone.

Police say the caller posed as a public defender and told the woman her grandchild was in jail. He asked her to wire money.

It wasn’t until she spoke with her grandchild she realized she’d been scammed.

Police say the best way to avoid this is to not answer unknown numbers.

Most phone scams are not local operations and police cannot recover the money.

Police say people should be wary of what’s posted online to avoid their identities being manipulated.
