UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — It’s the first day of class at UI and, for a lot of students, it means being a part of a long-standing tradition of taking a selfie with the Alma statue. But one UI student is going above and beyond the average selfie game.
On the first day of classes and the day of graduation, many students pose for a selfie with Alma. Sara Sigmon is taking it to another level. It all started her freshman year when she came to campus to sign up for classes and decided to take that selfie.
Sigmon says, “We walked passed Alma Mater and I just remember being inspired by her and her open arms.”
That first picture sparked an idea. She thought, “What if I just take a selfie every single day until I graduate?”
That’s exactly what she did. Sigmon created an Instagram account called @selfieswithalma and, if you scroll through her feed, you’ll see a page full of photos with Alma in the background. Fast forward one year later and here she is again.
“I’m becoming notorious for my selfies with alma and I didn’t ever expect that.”
On National Selfie Day, Sigmon shared her selfie picture on its Instagram account. People saw the photo, started following her on Instagram, and ever since then, she’s become known around campus. No matter if it’s raining or snowing, she makes time for this.
“It’s more than worth it. I love Alma and it’s the highlight of my day.”
Many have noticed her snapping these photos day-after-day. Her goals is to share this joy with others.
“My personal belief and philosophy in life is a life well-lived and one shared with others.”
Carrie Sovde and her daughter were touring campus on the first day of classes.
When she found out what Sigmon was doing she said, “I think that’s super fun and we’re going to follow her on Instagram because what a cool idea!!”
The photos are a way to highlight a special time in Sigmon’s life. She doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon.
“The last one I’m hoping will be in my cap and gown.”
Sigmon is getting her degree in advertising. This is just one of many ways she’s marketing her creativity. She’ll graduate in 2020 so there are many more Alma selfies to come.
