Search continues for man on the run from police

EDGAR COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — More details were discovered about a man on the run from police.

The Edgar County Sheriff’s Office has been trying to track down 27-year old Benjamin Hornbrook since Tuesday. He’s wanted for possession of stolen property in Edgar County and “escape” in Indiana.

The Indiana warrant is for intentionally violating his home detention. Deputies say Hornbrook and another woman broke into a small church in Kansas, Illinois on Tuesday. The woman was arrested but Hornbrook ran away. The small town was put on alert that afternoon.

Kirk Allen says, “My wife had text me that they had a problem at the parsonage. Her mother had just bought that place and were rebuilding it.”

They noticed two strangers trying to break in. That’s when Allen rushed over.

He says, “As soon as I pulled in I knew we had a problem.”

Allen called police. While he tried to stall them until police got there, he took pictures of Hornbrook and the woman he was with. They told Allen they tried to break in to charge their phone.

“The first local police officer showed up and at that point when he saw that officer he dumped his backpack and hauled like a rabbit.”

Hornbrook took off running. That’s when deputies arrested the woman. Allen says police told him she confessed to trying to break into the Pleasant Hills Church and the parsonage.

They left a lot of damage behind. On the parsonage door, there are pry marks. At the church across the street, there’s shattered glass where the window was smashed in.

The church caretaker says it’s been broken into before, but nobody has ever been caught. The congregation is only about 20 people. For them, this is another heartbreak. For many others who live in Kansas, it’s a disappointment.

Allen says, “It’s sad but that’s where we’re at in our society.”

Police haven’t said what the couple was doing in Kansas. Many in town say they’re just waiting for him to get caught.

“It’s just a matter of time before they find him. You can only run for so long.”

Hornbrook is about 5’7”. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and jeans.
