URBANA, Ill. (WCIA)– It’s the final days of summer for kids in Urbana, and students at Yankee Ridge Elementary may have a hard time recognizing the halls when they return on Monday. The district has put millions into upgrades and renovations are almost complete. The old building is still there, but they’ve added on some new additions.

There’s a new gym and stage. The students used to have the cafeteria and gym all in one space but now those areas are separate. There are 3 new fine arts building, 11 brand new classrooms, LED lights throughout the school and a new kitchen. They’ve remodeled the old classrooms so teachers have different furniture and more shelving. There’s new floors, and central air conditioning. The principal says they now have the room for a dual language program.

The changes took about 15 months to complete and cost almost ten million dollars. Everything isn’t completely new. The principal mentioned it was important to keep some of the old history and unique touches to the school the same.
