URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Authorities are warning the public about a phone spoofing scam.

It seems a legitimate phone number from the Urbana Police Department is being spoofed. It appears on caller ID as originating from UPD when it is not.

The scammer tells victims about “three federal complaints” being received and the caller is being transferred to a “supervisor.” Investigators think the call would proceed with threat of arrest unless a victim can pay.

Officials say, luckily, no one has fallen victim to the scam and victims have hung up before being connected to the “supervisor.”

Anyone receiving scam phone calls can report them to the IRS, the Federal Trade Commission or local authorities.
