VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A massive apartment fire forced parts of a major road to be closed.
Crews battled the flames for hours. The fire is finally out and everyone is okay. It happened on Route 1, in Westville.
Witnesses say a 2-story apartment building went up in flames about 1 pm, Monday. The road was closed shortly thereafter. Traffic is being rerouted while crews make sure the fire doesn’t spark back up.
Someone from the apartment building thinks the fire started in their bedroom, but they’re not sure why. Whatever the cause, thick, black smoke and flames billowed out of the roof for more than two hours.
More than ten different departments responded to the fire from as far away as Savoy; 37 miles from where the fire took place.
