Rauner faces backlash after calling NFL protest “disrespectful”

Local News

ILLINOIS — A protest turned Sunday football into a political debate after dozens of NFL players kneeled during the national anthem. Now, Governor Bruce Rauner is echoing words of President Trump.

Monday, he called the protest “disrespectful” to those who’ve died fighting for this country but critics say he should’ve stayed out of it.

The governor is part owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team didn’t even come out on the field for the national anthem Sunday.

Many Democratic leaders, including gubernatorial candidates, Ameya Pawar, J.B. Pritzker and Senator Daniel Biss say his comments are out of line and contradict First Amendment rights.

Right now, many are questioning why he was quick to speak on this issue and not others like Obamacare.
