UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Some UI students are trying to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day.
A Native American student group has been circulating a petition to make it happen. Organizers say they want the administration to change the calendar to celebrate the people in America before Columbus.
“There’s a discussion going in schools that Columbus discovered America, but he really didn’t discover America, and he committed a lot of unspeakable things to the native peoples here that were in America.”
The Illinois Student Senate backed the petition last year. More than 50 cities and states have renamed Columbus Day Indigenous People’s Day.
