UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS — People pass it every day on Neil Street.
The Abbott Power Plant has been there for decades, but now it’s time for an upgrade. It provides heat and electricity for UI buildings.
The oldest power plant stack is 77-years old and is ready to be retired.
Crews are tearing it down along with two 1970’s boilers, and replacing it with two new high-efficiency gas boilers.
The project should be completed over the summer.
